Skye Dance
Skyedance was first established in 2003 to meet the need for more dance classes in the area and to promote dance generally on the Isle of Skye and Lochalsh. The first Skyedance showcase was performed in June 2004 and was a sell out hit, confirming the appetite and passion for dance on the island. The creation of a new constituted committee and appointment of a dance development officer in 2006 found Skyedance really taking off and expanding, with regular classes in ballet, jazz and contemporary as well as invited guest tutors providing workshops in hip-hop, street, bollywood and salsa to a wide range of ages. In 2011 the Skyedance youth company was formed to provide the most talented dancers with the opportunity for more focused, advanced instruction and to take part in workshops and performances across Scotland. To date at least 3 past company dancers have gone on to study dance at post-secondary level and the company has been selected as one of the top 12 youth dance groups in Scotland. In 2014 and 2015 the Skyedance Youth Company was invited to take part in the Commonwealth Games dance workshops and last year was commissioned by Atlas Arts to choreograph an original work. The annual Skyedance Showcase continues to highlight the diversity and quality of instruction available, bringing together dancers from the regular Skyedance classes as well as providing a platform for all dancers and teachers of dance in the area. It has become a highlight for both the dancers and the wider public. Today Skyedance is still providing high quality dance classes across a range disciplines and is proud to be the first organization in the area to be able to offer the ISTD syllabus for our students. We were recently delighted to have been awarded funding from Creative Scotland to enable us to continue our core programme of classes as well as embark upon an exciting new creative cultural project which will see Skyedance building on it's foundation of creativity and performance and taking this forward in collaboration with a number of other cultural and creative groups in the area. To enable us to continue our ambitious and innovative work and keep creating opportunities for the young people of Skye and Lochalsh to participate in dance we are always in need of sponsors and donations, if you or your company are interested in contributing in any way we'd love to hear from you.
