SomaliAid is not just an NGO or a non-profit organization. It is an initiative by members of the Somali community to the Somali community everywhere around the world, established on the premise that an effective, sustainable solution to the Somali people's social and economic problems can only come from the Somali people themselves. It is an initiative that recognizes the value and capacity of every Somali individual and is based on the traditional Somali values of community and family welfare, support and interdependence in the times of difficulty and hardships, and the social structures of the Somali people that have become the victim of abuse lately. SomaliAid is a politically non-partisan organization which transcends the regional and belief barriers, and aims to serve every Somali individual regardless of their origin or current location. The organization was established to develop a modern, effective approach to the developmental issues facing the Somali communities all around the world. The goal is to build a platform that will enable the people to create sustainable communities that will resolve their social and economic issues, bringing them together and helping them realize the potential of an organized community-based welfare system where people not only contribute their financial resources but their human capital and ideas as well. In this context, SA will develop initiatives and programs that will realize this vision in the long term. These initiatives and programs will involve the support of various sectors deemed by the organization as crucial to the socio-economic development and sustainability of the target communities; and include education, healthcare, agriculture, fisheries, small and medium-size enterprise support, and micro financing. The organization has a separate strategic plan for each of its initiatives; common features these will share include the focus on sustainability (financial or otherwise), community ownership, and the dependence on resources contributed by the people. SA intends to build its work on the already-established social and economic frameworks to ensure the sustainability the organization's programs and initiatives require. The stakeholders in the organization's efforts will be involved in the formulation of effective delivery mechanisms that have built-in self-monitoring and transparent processes. To deliver the services SA offers to the community, the organization seeks to establish mutually-beneficial partnerships with other non-profit, commercial and/or governmental organizations and institutions, and harness these relationships for the benefit of the communities. SA will also take advantage of the existing social structures as a delivery mechanism.
