Sooner Dairy Lunch
James McHughes opened shop in 1954 along Norman Oklahoma's Flood Ave. 1958 found the restaurant moving to its current location at 1820 West Main Street. However, at the time, Main Street only extended west to Berry Road. Over the years, Sooner Dairy Lunch watched Norman grow while becoming a part of its history. Often considered the best burgers in Norman, Sooner Dairy Lunch has been frequented by the community for over 60 years. Generations of families and students have gathered to the restaurant for great affordable meals. Sooner Dairy also provided a place for life to happen in Norman. The restaurant used to employee carhops with the running joke of as soon as the carhops got trained, they'd get proposed to by a customer and the process would start over. Sometimes proposals and wedding dinners themselves happened at Sooner Dairy. Many game days have included stops by the local drive-in. The restaurant also has served its share of celebrities including ball players, coaches, actors, musicians, and politicians alike. While the restaurant no longer employees carhops, it still serves the best burgers and milkshakes in town. James' sons Jim and Randy currently maintain owning and operating the restaurant, you can still find 87-year old James McHughes enjoying work with his sons and other family. Come by Sooner Dairy Lunch and you'll not only be fed great food by a friendly family, you'll also be able to get a glimpse of Norman History.
