Sperrin Metal first opened its doors in Draperstown, Northern Ireland in 1963. Just two years earlier in 1961 the International Union of Railways signed an agreement on the use of a "standardised or exchangeable pallet" among railways. This was a response to the surge of freight traffic on European railway networks since the early fifties, post World War II. Along with changes to practices at port facilities and the development of the fork lift truck, palletisation revolutionised material handling and distribution worldwide. Sperrin Metal was first established in 1963 by the parish priest and a committee of local business people to provide employment for the area. Now a family owned company Sperrin Metal has grown and developed to become the leading pallet racking manufacturer in the UK and Ireland.
