The problem for most companies is that the processes around collaboration, distribution, and metrics are decentralized, making the process very tiring and tedious. For example, sending multiple Word documents, screenshots, or Google Doc links back and forth through email, copy-pasting everything in multiple cms systems, using different tools to optimize content for search engines, not having the time to adapt the content to all the different social channels and so on. So eventually you will end up in a mess if you'll keep doing so. The founders of StoryChief experienced this during their 5 years as a marketing agency.
