Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar School
Strathcona is an independent school, co-ed in Pre-Prep and girls from Prep to Year 12. The School recognises and encourages the qualities required of tomorrow's leaders - competence, confidence and compassion. Strathcona's mission is to help students build well-balanced foundations for personal and professional success in an ever-changing world. Every student is encouraged to feel free to believe in herself. Since its establishment in 1924, the School's sense of community and quality of care have been constantly demonstrated. Academically the VCE results are outstanding. The School has three campuses, with girls spending Year 9 at Tay Creggan, a beautiful historic building on the Yarra River in Hawthorn which has been magnificently renovated. This unique campus, established in 1969, was the first to offer a non-residential off-campus experience for students. Years 7 - 12 are located in Canterbury and a purpose built Junior School, in close proximity to the Main Campus in Canterbury, opens in 2005. Students attending Canterbury campus have excellent facilities - a modern Science and Middle School Centre and specialist rooms for creative arts and languages, a gymnasium, heated indoor swimming pool and sporting fields. A new Senior and Information Resources Centre has recently opened. There is an extensive choice with the VCE program offering all prerequisites for tertiary courses. Students are challenged to explore their individual learning styles and thinking strategies with special programs in Year 7, 8 and 9. There is a comprehensive co-curricular program including music, sport, drama, dance and public speaking. All students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities to assist in the development of life skills. Pastoral care plays an important role at Strathcona with personal, social and spiritual development nurtured. There is a sense of family with many cross-age links amongst the students and close ties between home and school. Outstanding computer facilities and a home-to-school computer link eliminate the need for expensive laptops, ensuring all students are able to utilise interactive technology to communicate effectively. Strathcona offers school exchanges with Korea, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Canterbury and Hawthorn campuses are well serviced by train, bus and tram.
