The origins of The Digital Distribution Company are very insightful to our mission and highlight the client need we discovered through our respective journeys. This is why we present it here. When Christoph Haberbauer ventured out to Asia as a newly minted MBA from the London Business School, he landed in Jakarta to build an eCommerce super store modelled after Amazon.com for Rocket Internet. Lazada.com has meanwhile been acquired by Alibaba for USD3.5bn and is the dominant online marketplace in South-East Asia. What struck him the most during the journey was the almost complete absence of logistics providers to serve the generated online sales demand by the platform. Everything had to be built from scratch, including warehouses on six islands and a last mile delivery service. Upon his return to Europe and now in charge of the internationalisation of the digitally native furniture brand MADE.COM he discovered a different but similarly challenging dilemma. The logistics infrastructure available for online retailers was tailored to small packages, working well for sending shoes, but not so much for sofas. He worked together with the logistics partners to improve the service and managed to make the DACH region a significant contributor to the brand now making more than EUR200m in annual revenue. Thomas Arndt spent his entire 20+ year career in the consumer package goods industry. A lawyer by training and with a MBA under his belt - Thomas started as the first employee for Red Bull Germany back in 1993. With Red Bull he moved to California in 2001 and helped build Red Bull to become a successful brand in the US. In 2008 Thomas left Red Bull to start his own venture in the USA - Y water - a healthy kids beverage. To fund Y water - Thomas started a management company and helped companies like Gerolsteiner, Adelholzener and Bionade to launch their products - as their extended arm - in the USA.
