The Bristol Cable
The core team of The Bristol Cable is a collective of approximately ten people, local to Bristol, involved in developing the project on a daily basis. We all come from a variety of backgrounds with diverse skills and current occupations, ranging from waiters, university tutors, youth workers, administrators, journalists, unemployed and more. We share in common the aim of redefining local media and producing quality independent journalism. The Bristol Cable is legally registered as a Community Benefit Society. As a cooperative we have set up a membership scheme to enable people and organisations to actively participate in The Cable's decision making, coordinate our activities, and support the project financially- for as little as £1 a month. See our organisational structure for a sense of how we operate (bottom of the page). What do we aim to do? We aim to redefine local media as we know it. By organising ourselves as a democratic co-operative and working with different groups and individuals in the city, we aim to organise the active participation of a broad range of people in creating an alternative media outlet in the city. We will publish a magazine every two months and continuously update this website as our online multimedia platform. Our first edition was released late October 2014 with a print-run of 10 000 copies. Our content covers local investigations, people's history, local voices, info-graphics, illustrations, fiction, and other features. We strive to present journalism in interactive and engaging forms using graphic design, podcasts, text, photography, illustrations and films. Whilst all working hard voluntarily at the moment, we aim to make The Cable financially able to pay contributors and remunerate organisers - we consider this both an organisational necessity and social commitment.
