One of the South's leading data storage and data capture companies has helped The Bournemouth & Poole College Engineering Department to bring its stores system up to date. BIAS Technology Support, based at Holton Heath near Poole, has donated the latest hand held bar code Scanner to the department free of charge. Craig Robinson, Apprenticeship Manager for the Engineering, Marine and Motor department, said BIAS Technology's involvement has given the department an exciting boost. He said: "The system will help us keep track of the many tools and pieces of equipment that we use every day. It's not just that tools go missing or get damaged, we need to be able to monitor the equipment accurately to be sure that when it needs servicing we are on the case." The electronic hand-held bar code device links to college computer software to identify where a piece of kit is in the system and flags-up when it needs servicing or is due a maintenance check. Mark Loose, Head of Engineering at the college, added: "The system will be no different to the kind that operate in the most sophisticated engineering environments, such as aerospace, shipbuilding and manufacturing. The fact that BIAS Technology has helped create a system that is up to modern standards which is good for all our trainees. The ability of our stores departments to operate efficiently on a database system sends out the right message." Paul Bartlett, Managing Director of BIAS Technology Support, said his company is proud to be able to help out the college Engineering department. "We have good links with the college, having brought through three apprentices in recent years. This is our way of giving something back. We recognise the need for proper training of engineers for the good of the community and the economic well-being of the country."
