The Dev Department
We founded The Dev Department in March of 2008 because we saw a need in the boutique design firm market. Our founder, Nick Villaume, had been working as a web developer for 15 years and most of that time had been as a freelance resource helping designers sell, plan, and execute web site and web application projects. In the course of doing this, he partnered with a Orange Star Design, a boutique graphic design firm in Decatur, Georgia. With Jodi Hersh, the firm's owner, he developed a very practical and honest methodology for executing successful web projects. As time passed, Nick began to notice a common thread across the design industry. Most designers were making the transition from traditional print media to web and were badly in need of help in that transition. They needed a partner who understood from where they had come and a partner that would work patiently to help them make the leap. Most had tried moonlighters and offshore resources and had come up short time and again because the resource was either unreliable or was unable to interpret the designer's needs . Further, the designer lacked a common vocabulary and process to communicate this to them. Seeing this deficit of web development process in the boutique design business, Nick invented The Dev Department based on the same approach as that of traditional print shops whereby the designer would deliver designs and design files in a very strict format. He decided that the best way to communicate this format was through offering classes and education to small design firms who otherwise lacked the resources to acquire this knowledge on their own and, ultimately, the Dev Department Web Design Certification.
