Over the last fifty years, the growth of Thompson Insurance has mirrored the economic expansion of Alabama and the Southeastern United States. The history and experience of the agency and its staff has it poised for the next half century of serving the needs of insureds across the Gulf Coast. The Edward Thompson Agency (predecessor of Thompson Insurance, Inc.) was founded in 1963 by Edward M. Thompson. After a stint in the family wholesale grocery business and then later as a homebuilder, Mr. Thompson decided to start his own independent insurance agency. His hard work, dedication to professionalism, and civic involvement ensured his success. Edward's nephew, George Thompson III, joined The Edward Thompson Agency in 1977 after his own stint in the family grocery business. Two of Mr. Thompson's sons, Irby and Robert, joined the agency shortly thereafter, and in 1979 the company moved its office to 2951 Zelda Road. In 1984, George, Irby and Robert purchased the Edward Thompson Agency and formed Thompson Insurance, Inc. Mr. Thompson passed away in 1986 and in the following years, both Robert and Irby went on to pursue other careers. Today, George Thompson is the sole stockholder and President of Thompson Insurance, Inc. He continues in the footsteps of his Uncle Ed; dedicated to professionalism, civic involvement and hard work. In 2005, the agency relocated to its current location at 3300 Gatsby Lane, and in 2012, as Thompson Insurance expanded its surety bonding department, the agency now has a second location on Cahaba River Road in Birmingham. Some faces may have changed as well as addresses and zip codes, but the mission of Thompson Insurance has remained just as it was when Edward Thompson wrote his first personal auto policy in 1963: To professionally serve its insureds so that their losses and their cost of protection are minimized.
