Trident Insurance
Trident Insurance Company Limited was established in 1979 when we obtained our license to underwrite general (non-life) insurance risks. The company's origins date back to 1966 when its insurance portfolio was placed 100% with Lloyd's of London. Today, Lloyd's and the London market remain one of our important overseas sources of reinsurance capacity. During the company's history, Trident has been majority-controlled by well respected Barbadian conglomerates such as the former Plantations Trading Company Limited. From 1993 to 1997, the Barbados Mutual Life Assurance Company (The Mutual), now known as Sagicor, was the majority shareholder in Trident. In 1997, the Mutual's interest in Trident was purchased by a group of local investors led by the Leacock Group. In early 2007, the Leacock Group partnered with GraceKennedy of Jamaica (GKCO) and launched a successful bid to purchase the equity holdings of Cooper Gay and Co., London, UK, the remaining single largest shareholder in Trident, with the Firgos Group as the third partner. This transaction resulted in the Leacock Group acquiring controlling interest of the company. Trident is currently ranked within the top 10 listing of insurers in Barbados (based on Gross Written Premiums). Our long heritage, innovative approach to customer service and commitment to use only excellent reinsurance security, provided by global Market leaders which are Standard & Poor's A rated companies, accompanied by our strong balance sheet, makes us one of the most financially sound insurance companies in Barbados.
