Turner Centre
The services of well-known local architect Martyn Evans were sought and he agreed to take on the design work resulting in a stunning and unique complex which has been built over a number of stages. The latest being the completion of The Plaza Theatre opened for operation in 2011. The site was purchased in 1989 by the Bay of Islands County Council. The Kerikeri Civic Trust was formed in 1995 as a charitable trust to build and own the Turner Centre as a multi-purpose event venue serving the Far North District to replace the old Kerikeri Memorial Hall. At June 2012 the net assets of buildings and fit out were transferred from of the Kerikeri Civic Trust to The Centre at Kerikeri Ltd, trading as the Turner Centre. The Far North District Council acquired a 0.95% shareholding in exchange for part of the loan from Westpac it had guaranteed and serviced so as to complete the Turner Centre. It is intended that a similar exchange will occur in future years until the original loan of $1.9m is extinguished.
