Upper Peninsula Health Plan

Upper Peninsula Health Plan (UPHP) is a managed-care and provider-service organization based in Marquette, Michigan. The mission of UPHP is to be an innovative health plan managing the care of our members in the Upper Peninsula guiding them to quality, cost-effective care through our network of providers improving the overall health of the communities we serve. The health plan manages the care of more than 47,000 Upper Peninsula residents enrolled in Medicaid, Healthy Michigan Plan, MIChild, Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS), MI Health Link, or Medicare Advantage. In addition to serving members, thousands of Upper Peninsula residents get care from the UPHP network via commercial insurance - often offered by their employers. UPHP serves as the hub for all commercial managed-care and preferred provider organization (PPO) activity in the Upper Peninsula. The health plan offers administrative services related to health care to employers and other purchasers of such services. It also develops and maintains provider networks for insurers by negotiating contracts with regional physicians, hospitals, and other providers. Upper Peninsula Health Plan became a health plan for Upper Peninsula residents on August 1, 1998, when it partnered with 300 medical providers, 15 hospitals, and clinics in every Upper Peninsula county. At this time, the office staff in Marquette was small with only six employees. UPHP started by managing the health care of 1,900 enrolled members. Today, the staff has increased to more than 140 employees, and enrollment has increased to almost 50,000 members. The health plan's success has provided employment, wages, and benefits for a talented segment of the Marquette County community. The staff has contributed time and resources to many regional and national charitable events.
