UD4H's mission is to support clients with innovative tools to realize health promotion, environmental, economic, and quality of life goals that are intrinsic in efforts to build new communities and to retrofit existing ones. Urban Design 4 Health, Inc. / Ltd. (UD4H) was originally incorporated as Lawrence Frank and Company (LFC) in the U.S. in 1997 and in Canada in 2003. UD4H specializes in applied research on the interactions between land use, transportation, air quality, climate change, and public health. UD4H takes a uniquely "pracademic" approach in its research and provides evidence-based, policy-relevant advice to its clients. UD4H's mission is to support clients with innovative and objective information and tools to realize health promotion, environmental, economic, and quality of life goals that are intrinsic in efforts to build new communities and to retrofit existing ones. UD4H has a demonstrated track record in conducting research and has been a pioneer in the assessment of how the design of communities impacts environmental and health-related outcomes. UD4H's staff has written numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers and books, and has conducted a number of leading studies that have shaped the debate over the health and environmental implications of automobile-dependent environments. UD4H has also led the development of methods to measure the relationships between land development patterns and human activity patterns. The research methods developed by UD4H have been applied in dozens of studies in the U.S., Canada, and overseas. UD4H was founded by Dr. Lawrence D. Frank who leads the firm as its president. Dr. Frank is a Professor at the School of Community and Regional Planning and the School of Population and Public Health as well as the Director of the Community Design Lab at the University of British Columbia.
