Watergate Bay Hotel

Set on its own spectacular surfing beach on the north Cornwall coast, Watergate Bay Hotel and the Extreme Academy has earned a reputation as one of the 'must visit' coastal destinations in the UK. It's a place that is all about the balance of life, being active, getting amongst the elements, eating and drinking well, spoiling yourself a little, chilling out, getting cosy and most of all having a good time. Founded in 1999, the concept behind the Extreme Academy was to create a "ski resort on a beach" - to make Watergate bay a place where people could be active as well as relax. Extreme Academy's sports school transformed the beach into a mixture of classroom, playground and the wild outdoors, offering lessons for people who wanted to try new sports or improve their skills in a range of activities. In 2005 world champion waveskier Carl Coombes joined as Sports Manager and Carl has increased the portfolio of sports taught at the Extreme Academy, adding waveski, hand planing and stand-up paddlesurf to the original portfolio of surfing, kitesurf and traction-kiting. Extreme Academy was the country's first kitesurf school and became the first UK venue to host an event on the PKRA World Kitesurfing tour, establishing Watergate Bay as a premier kitesurfing destination as well as a popular surfing spot. Since then the Extreme Academy sports school has been completely rebuilt to include heated changing facilities with hot showers and lockers, and a new booking and equipment hire office. We are constantly looking for the new 'adrenalin fueled' sport and latest equipment. Whilst the waves of Watergate Bay have hosted surfing competitions since the 1960s, Extreme Academy has more recently held top-level kitesurf events, thundercats powerboat racing, stand up paddlesurf championships and in 2007 the first ever polo match to be played on a UK beach.
