Wesley Community Development

We are an outreach ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, charged with building communities of HOPE and GRACE. We provide energy-efficient affordable housing for low to very low income individuals or families. This is done with the help of volunteer labor so people who work can afford to live in a comfortable home they will own. Our objective is to not only build homes that are affordable for these families and individuals to purchase, but to live in and maintain afterwards. By partnering with Advanced Energy, another non-profit organization, we can keep heating and cooling costs to a minimum. We build with 2x6 exterior studs for an insulation rating of R19 in the walls, and add an extra heel to the roof truss for an R30 insulation rating in the ceiling. We use double pane insulated windows and doors, and use a heavy house wrap. The homes are so airtight that we install an air recycler that will bring in fresh air every 20 minutes. By following Advanced Energy's guidelines, they will guarantee that heating and cooling costs to average less than $28.00 to $38.00 a month.
