Thank You Whidbey Island! Coldwell Banker Tara Properties wants to give a huge thank you to Whidbey Islanders for stepping up and doing the right thing during our recent E-Waste Recyling event. On Thursday May 31 the last truckload of old computers collected during the two week event rolled away from the Coldwell Banker Tara Properties corporate office in Freeland. The event, which ran from Earth Day, April 22nd to Cinco de Mayo, May 5th, was conceived as a way the company could help islanders tackle the problem of how to safely recycle unwanted electronics and at the same time help Habitat build a home for a local family. Your response exceeded all our expectations; Islanders had a lot of computers squirreled away! Not only did we as a community keep hundreds of pieces of electronic waste out of the landfill, but we also generated $2047.69 for Habitat for Humanity. We've had a lot of people asking if we'll be doing this on a regular basis. Island County Solid Waste is developing a plan to handle this kind of hazardous waste, so we'll follow their lead. We look forward to helping out with this or other recycling projects as needed. We had a great time and learned a lot. We owe additional thanks to several people who gave guidance to our efforts, Janet Hall of Waste Wise, Jerry Mingo of Island County Solid Waste, and Glen Gaidos, owner of 3 R Technology, the recycling vendor for the project. And, I especially want to thank our employees and agents who helped out and cheerfully maneuvered around the piles of electronics that crowded their offices for the past several weeks.
