Whitespace
Whitespace has designed and built a new app to answer that question and help users make the most of their wine cellar. The app, created for independent Edinburgh publisher Floris Books to support their annual book 'When Wine Tastes Best', integrates biodynamic data from a calendar developed by the late biodynamic expert Maria Thun. For some years wine buyers at Tesco and Marks & Spencer have only held tastings for wine critics on days when, according to the calendar, the wines are at their best. And between them these supermarkets sell a third of the wine drunk in the UK, so they are probably onto something - something it's time the rest of us found out about. When a date is selected on the free iPhone/iPad app, the glass will either be full (indicating it is a good day) or empty (indicating a bad day). You can have good and bad periods within a single day. Users can then complete an in-app purchase for only £1.99 to view data for the rest of the year. This can help with planning ahead to guarantee an occasion with the best wine-drinking prospects - perhaps a birthday, special celebration or dinner party. Chani McBain, Marketing Manager at Floris Books said: "We've enjoyed bringing 60 years of Maria Thun's research to a wide audience and using technology to make it bang up-to-date and accessible. With nearly 400 downloads in the first week it looks like there's many more people now enjoying wine at its best. Iain Valentine, Creative Director, Whitespace raises a glass to a successful project: "This app development is a great example of when digital channels can complement traditional publishing and bring complex data to life, making it fun and engaging. I think we'll all say 'cheers' to that!" View the app demo and download the app.
