Winn Parish School Board
The school was established in 1924. The present high school building was built in 1929. Renovation projects to the elementary school were made in 1972. Bond issues made possible renovations to the gym and a new agriculture building in the mid 1980's. Another major renovation to the school was completed in 2003. Due to parental involvement, highly motivated students, and dedicated faculty and staff, CHS continues the tradition to achieve excellence in academics, athletics, extra and co-curricular activities. CHS has been given the title of a Three-Star School of Exemplary Academic Growth by the Louisiana School Accountability System. The 2011 Calvin High School Performance Score is 114.1, the highest score in Winn Parish, with a letter grade of B-. Calvin has been recognized by the U. S. News and World Report as one of the nation's best high schools. CHS has received the Bronze Award for the four years high schools have been recognized. Calvin High has excellent parental involvement and tremendous community support. All of our resources at CHS are focused on enhancing and improving student performance and achievement. Calvin High School has an outstanding athletic program. Calvin High received the prestigious 2005 Ford Cup as the Most Outstanding Athletic Program in Class C. In 2003, 2005, and 2007 The Lady Cougar Basketball Teams were Class C State Runners-Up. The Lady Cougars won the Class C Basketball State Championship in 2006 and 2008. In 1998 and 2009, the Lady Cougar Softball Teams were the State Runners-up. The Lady Cougar Softball Teams won back to back State titles in 2004 and 2005 and again in 2007 and 2008. In 1938, the Cougars were named the State Basketball Champions. In 2003, the Cougar Basketball Team made it to the Top 28 as a State Semi-Finalist. In 2004 and 2005 the Boys' Basketball team made the playoffs as Class C Quarter-Finalists. The Calvin High School Future Farmers of America Chapter has won the Louisiana FFA Area II Sweepstakes every year since 1995. The local chapter has won the State Sweepstakes Trophy as the top FFA chapter in the State of Louisiana in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011. We have other exceptional organizations. In 2011, FBLA competed at the National FBLA Conference in Mr. Future Business Leader, Global Business, and Principles and Procedures. In 2009 and 2010 the chapter competed at National in Public Speaking I, Public Speaking II, and FBLA Principles and Procedures. The chapter has also competed in Nationals in 2004 and 2005. Other outstanding organizations include the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council, Beta, and 4-H Clubs. Over the past eighty-eight years, Calvin High School has had many outstanding leaders. Former principals include R.E. Oxford, Linnie Russell Nelson, Roy Sanders, L. V. Decou, George H. Walker, K. C. Simmons, W.E. Carpenter, Jr., Lanis Dale Carpenter, and Steve Bartlett. Rodney C. Shelton has been the Principal of Calvin High School since 1997.
